TUESDAY 19TH AUGUST DAY 8:
EXCURSION TO THE CLIFFS OF MOHER AND ARAN ISLANDS
In the morning you will travel through the magnificent landscape of the BURREN, a karst limestone region with a vast lunar like landscape. It is famous for its botanic variety harbouring many rare plants and flowers. Continue to the nearby famous towering CLIFFS OF MOHER, metres above the Atlantic Ocean at their highest point one of Ireland’s most spectacular sights. Standing over 200 and stretching for 8km along the rugged coastline, the Cliffs boast one of the most amazing views in Ireland. We will enter O’Brien’s Tower which will give us access to the rooftop area that offers the best photo opportunity of the Cliffs. From here you will cross the Atlantic to visit one of the Aran Islands, The three islands stretch across the mouth of Galway Bay. Fishing & tourism are the main industries. Old island traditions live on; the currach (a light tar-covered boat) is still used by some for fishing and for the summer races. Most island women knit the traditional Aran sweater and pass on the skill. Gaelic is the first language among the islanders but most are bilingual. Inish more is a paradise of flora and fauna but also a vast open-air museum, rich in archaeological and monastic sites. You will tour the island by minibus and visit the impressive stone fort Dun Aengus. After spending some time in the local village you will return by ferry to the mainland to join our coach. Return our hotel in Ballinasloe for dinner and overnight.
WEDNESDAY 20TH AUGUST DAY 9: FAMINE MUSEUM
Strokestown Park House was the seat of the Pakenham-Mahon family from 1600 to 1979, and the vast estate, which stretches for miles in every direction, was granted to Nicholas Mahon by King Charles II after the Restoration in appreciation of his support of the House of Stewart during the bloody English Civil War. It was quite a reward. The original house, completed in 1697, was considered to be too small and unimposing by Nicholas’s grandson, Thomas. So he hired Richard Cassels (also known as Richard Castle) to build him something bigger and more impressive. The result is this 45-room Palladian house. The north wing houses Ireland’s last existing galleried kitchen (where the lady of the house could observe the culinary activity without being part of it). The south wing is an elaborate vaulted stable so magnificent that it has been described as an “equine cathedral.”
To see the other end of the economic scale, head out into the old stable yards to the excellent Irish Famine Museum. Anyone who wants to understand the effects and causes of the deadly potato blight of the 1840s will want to visit this exhibition. It chronicles the twists of fate, catastrophic mistakes, and callous disregard that caused widespread starvation and mass deaths. The cruel irresponsibility of the landowners and the British government of Ireland in ignoring the spreading death and disease are exposed in jaw-dropping detail. This has been called one of the most important museums in Ireland, and that is not overstating it.
